How to make a dried lavender Pillow
This tutorial is for making a lavender sleep pillow or dream pillow. This long narrow lavender pillow is made to slip into the pillowcase of your regular pillow. It rest along the bottom edge where your neck will be when you sleep. You can turn over during the night and you will still have lavender within inches of your nose. This pillow has a ribbon drawstring so you can empty it and add more
Lavender when the old lavender fades. It is also washable when empty.
For this dream pillow you will need,
5"x22" piece of lightweight cotton fabric.
12" of 1/8" ribbon
1.5 ounces of
dried lavender
Here I have used organic cotton muslin, but you may use any lightweight cotton fabric that you may have. This is a great way to use up fabric scraps.
Turn down 1/4 inch on one of the short ends, press with iron, and then turn down 1 inch more and press.
Open the second fold and sew 3/8 from the long edge on both sides. This is reinforcement stitching and should be about 1/2 inch long. I usually sew the half inch and then sew in reverse to back out and end where I began. That way it is double stitched.
Now snip the fabric close to the stitching, between the stitching and the cut edge, on both sides. Make the snip just slightly shorter then the stitching.
Fold the one inch fold back down again and stitch close to the 1/4 inch fold, through all layers. Then sew again 1/4 inch away from that stitching. This is your ribbon casing, if you are using ribbon that is wider then 1/8 inch, you need to make this wider too.
Please note that this side is the right side (or outside) of your lavender pillow.
Fold in half lengthwise, right sides together and using a 1/4 inch seam stitch the long side seam and the bottom. Notice the side with the little snips is on the inside. You may finish the seam with a zigzag stitch or by surging if you wish, but it's not necessary.
Trim off the bottom corner.
And turn right side out.
You will probably have a few stray threads sticking out at the openings of the casing (where you snipped), carefully trim these off. Then Using a small safety pin, thread the ribbon through the casing.
All done!
Now for the fun part!
Fill your dream pillow with the
dried lavender.
Your finished lavender pillow.
Your dried lavender sleep pillow also makes a great neck wrap during the day. Tuck it around your neck under your shirt for constant lavender bliss.
